Getting the cleanest result

What fights back:
- Heavy reverb and long delay tails. The reverb is part of the voice, so it comes along with the acapella. Cut the vocal short in your editor and you can hear the tail stop dead; that is a giveaway in a mashup, so leave the tails room to ring out.
- Stacked harmonies and doubled vocals. Anything sung stays with the vocal stem, so a wall of harmonies arrives as one block. Great if you want the full arrangement; awkward if you only wanted the lead.
- Live recordings. Crowd noise, stage bleed and a room microphone all sit in the same space as the singer. Expect a rougher acapella, and check it before you commit.
- Loud, dense masters. A heavily limited wall-of-sound mix leaves less space between the parts, and less space means more bleed.
- Lo-fi, tape and vinyl rips. Hiss, crackle and wow are spread across the whole recording and follow the voice into the acapella.
- A vocal that is already an effect. Vocoders, talkboxes and heavily pitched or robotised voices sit somewhere between an instrument and a singer, and land in a different stem than you expect.
Two things that do not matter, despite what old tutorials say: it does not need to be a stereo file, and the vocal does not need to be panned dead centre. Nothing is being cancelled here, so a mono upload and an off-centre voice are both fine.

Why does my acapella still have harmony parts in it?
Because anything sung counts as a vocal. The separation puts everything that is sung into the vocal stem, harmonies and doubles included. There is no setting that keeps only the lead; if you need the lead alone you have to edit the harmony sections out by hand.

The acapella keeps the song's original key and tempo. Time-stretch or pitch-shift it in your DAW if your project needs a different one.
