Pitch and speed, separately

Old-fashioned pitch shifting is just playing the record faster: raise the pitch and the song speeds up with it. This doesn't do that. The two sliders are independent, so you can transpose a track a fourth up and it stays exactly as long as it was.

• Key — up or down 12 semitones, a full octave either way
• Speed — 50% to 150%, with the pitch left alone
• Both at once — slow it down and drop it a tone, if that's what you need

How to change the pitch of a song

1. Drop your file in the box above (MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC or a video file, up to 10 minutes).
2. Drag the Key slider to the number of semitones you want. One semitone is one fret, or one piano key.
3. Press Change it, listen to the result, and download the MP3.

What people use it for

• Singing in a key that fits. A song sits two semitones too high for your range — drop it two and the backing is yours.
• Learning a part. Slow it to 70% without the pitch dropping, and every note stays where it is on the instrument.
• Matching two tracks. Bring a sample into the key of your project instead of the other way around.
• Tuning to a different reference. Playing along with an instrument tuned a semitone down is one slider away.

How far you can push it

This is real time-stretching, not a speed knob, so it holds up much further than resampling does — but not infinitely. A semitone or three is transparent on most material. Past about five, cymbals and vocal consonants start to smear, and at a full octave you'll hear it. Same for speed: 70–130% is comfortable, and below half the algorithm turns to soup, which is why the slider stops at 50%.
