Practising over a drumless version of a real song is harder than practising to a click, and that difficulty is the entire point. With the original drummer removed you lose the reference you've been unconsciously leaning on, and any tendency to rush the fills or drag the backbeat becomes obvious immediately.
The trick is knowing what to lock onto instead. Use the bass as your anchor rather than trying to feel the beat in the air: bass and drums are cut together on almost every record, so the bass line is already sitting exactly where the kick was. On tracks where the bass is sparse, listen for the guitar or keyboard chord stabs, which usually land on the backbeat. StemGrab also shows the tempo of the song next to the stems, so if you want a safety net you can run a quiet click at that BPM underneath the drumless mix for the first few passes and then drop it.
Work in sections rather than playing the whole song top to bottom. The transitions are where timing falls apart, so loop the four bars around each one until the change stops feeling like a leap. And record yourself over the drumless track at least once: hearing your own playing in place of the original drummer is more informative than any amount of playing along in the moment.
Removing the drums entirely isn't always what you want, and the mixer on the results page gives you the middle ground. Mute the drum stem and everything else keeps playing, so you can hear the drumless mix instantly without downloading anything. Un-mute it and you're back to the full song for reference. Flipping between the two while looping a tricky bar is the fastest way to work out what the original drummer actually played.
You can also go the other way and solo the drums, which is the best transcription tool on the page: the drum part on its own, with no guitars covering the ghost notes or the hi-hat detail. Once you've decided what you need, download selected takes just those stems rather than the full zip.
Two honest limits. Cymbals and hi-hats live in the same frequency range as a lot of guitar and synth detail, so a very cymbal-heavy track can leave a faint wash behind in the drumless version. And an 808 or sub-bass kick often overlaps the bass line so completely that part of it stays with the bass stem: mute both and the low end vanishes, mute only the drums and a little thump may remain. Neither gets in the way of practising.
